Surface coating of tribological applications is associated with deposition temperatures ranging from room temperature to over 1000°C, see Fig. 2. The coating thicknesses range from microns to several millimetres. Typically, the atomistic methods produce the thinnest coatings.

The contributions to this special issue will discuss state-of-the-art techniques and procedures to deposit coatings on surfaces of medical implants and devices with osseoconductive and/or osseoinductive functionality, as well as favorable tribological properties to limit friction between articulating parts of hip and knee endoprostheses. deposited coatings of TiB2 as well as multilayers of Cr/CrN. The correlation between deposition parameters and fundamental coating properties such as microstructure, composition, residual stress and hardness has been investigated. Finally, the influence of these properties on the coating behaviour in tribological applications has been evaluated. The tribological performance of the three coatings is simulated alongside the commercial graphite coating and the uncoated piston, considering both boundary and viscous lubrications.

Tribological coatings are applied to reduce friction and increase wear resistance on items that will be in moving contact with other surfaces.

Tribological and Functional Coatings publications One of the keys to reducing friction and protecting against wear is to coat components with diamond-like carbon (DLC) or hydrocarbon layers. Further functions of components like reflection, sensors and barrier effect are adjusted via PVD coatings.

On the other hand, the typical mechanisms for gradual wear are the same for coatings … Tribological and Functional Coatings publications One of the keys to reducing friction and protecting against wear is to coat components with diamond-like carbon (DLC) or hydrocarbon layers. Further functions of components like reflection, sensors and barrier effect are adjusted via PVD coatings. A coating is a layer of a substance that is deposited over the surface of an object or a part, referred to as the substrate. Whatever the environmental temperature, coatings protect the surface of components and improve surface properties such as wear resistance, wear corrosion, and scratch resistance.

One is the continuing move down the length scale in terms of the fundamental understanding of tribological contacts. This has been particularly useful in aiding the development of new coatings by identifying their property requirements at different scale levels. This paper presents the results of corrosion and tribological analysis of pure and nanocomposite zinc coatings. Coatings were electroplated using commercially available products—zinc acidic bath and a nanoparticle carrying plating additive. Electrochemical measurements were carried out to compare the anticorrosion performance of coatings. An investigation into the influence of Tribological dry coatings The surface systems are used to optimize the coefficient of friction and improve protection against corrosion. They consist of compositions such as organic solid lubricants and fluoropolymers and can be designed according your requirements.

The hard coating can provide good wear protection and, with a suitable choice of material and surface layer design, the friction can also be low, against an appropriate counterface.

In addition to this, results demonstrate the effective friction reduction and wear enhancement capabilities of GO coatings over a commercial graphite coating applied to the piston-skirt. Anodic coatings are produced onto the surface of various components, made of aluminum alloys, in order to enhance their surface properties.

Thin-film and tribological coatings Thin films can modify the superficial properties without affecting the basic bulk material characteristics. These functional coatings usually change both the hardness and toughness of the surface. They can also be tailored such that its durability, friction, and/or wear characteristics are dramatically improved.

The solution acts as  DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings have remarkable tribological properties due mainly to their good frictional behavior.
