Vanora Bennett studied Russian at Oxford University and in the USSR. She began her career as a journalist at Reuters and went on to serve as Moscow correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, winning an US Overseas Press Club award for her writing on Russia. Vanora Bennett describes much of the life of Catherine de Valois a young princess struggling to survive the neglect of her father’s Too long, too detailed and yet somehow never managing to clarify the political contexts the characters find themselves in to a reader unfamiliar with the early to mid fifteenth century. Set in late fourteenth century England, Vanora Bennett's rich, dramatic new novel presents an England uncannily like our own. The country is in turmoil, The King is in debt to the City, and the old order had broken down - a time of opportunity indeed, for those who can seize the moment.
